Dell SC420 with large hard drive and CentOS 5.4

Postby UnixMan » Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:33 pm

I have some old Dell SC420s which are still going strong - but now running out of disk space. I'd like to put in a modern hard drive, such as a Samsung SATA II 1.5TB of some sort. Does anyone know if the SATA controllers in a Dell SC420 can handle such a large drive? I'm planning to run CentOS 5.4.

Would appreciate any opinions.

In case this helps anyone else in the future: Yes, the SATA controller in the Dell SC420 can handle drives of this size. In this case, the drive was a "Samsung EcoGreen F2 SATAII 1.5TB 32Mb Cache Hard Drive". That was on one SATA port, with an old 320GB Seagate on the other - worked fine.

Only thing was that CentOS 5.4 didn't want to play (see http://www.unix-manuals.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=197), so I used CentOS 5.3 instead. Drives formatted as one encrypted filesystem, working fine.
