Running Windows applications on Linux systems

While obviously we'd all prefer to use native Linux applications, and do in most cases, there are some cases where it's desirable to run a Windows application on Linux.

What experiences do people have of doing this? I've had success using VMWare on Linux, and found it very stable for running Windows applications. I've not tried Wine - can anyone comment on Wine?

Finally, for .NET applications, has anyone successfully run .NET software designed for Windows on Linux (or other UNIX systems)? Would love to hear more about this one, and any other comments anyone has.
